I remember being a not quite pubescent girl, watching SWV and other early nineties female vocal groups on MTV. A girl from my class told me about SWV on the bus, “it means Sister With Voices” she said.
My feelings around my own sexuality were still pretty hazy, very new, but I liked the world they created in their videos. They were sexy, and they wore athletic jerseys - with sunglasses. You never see any of the men’s faces in this video. Sure they desired men, but that desire existed within a very female sphere. Women wanting men, wanting sex, wanting pleasure - not men wanting women wanting men etc.
There is a strong female gaze in the video, and while the male gaze isn’t absent - it isn’t the only thing.
